The Remodeling Corner

Janet Cook

There are two major annual home remodeling industry shows: the International Builders Show (IBS) and Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) where training is offered, professionals are recognized, and vendors can showcase their products. Both offer award recognition for the most innovative and best in design for home improvement products. It is good to know what improvements are being made and what is coming to market.

At IBS, two entries won two awards each.

Best in Show and Most Innovative Product: Evolve Stone by Evolve. Authentic-looking stone siding for indoor and outdoor use. It solves the issue of moisture intrusion and is easy to install.

Best in Home Technology and Best Energy Efficient Product: Span Generation 2 Smart Panel by Span. It is an energy management system that replaces the electrical panel, allowing homeowners to monitor use, cut circuits, and it can streamline solar power use and storage.

Best Indoor Product: Flush-Mount Pantry Door by Murphy Door. The door front can be finished with etched glass, mirror, or chalkboard, and the back features adjustable spice rack shelves and a fixed shelf adding 15 cubic feet of storage.

Best in Kitchen & Bath: Swidget 20/40/60 Control Switch by Swidget. It automatically turns on and off the bathroom fan based on occupancy, air quality, or humidity levels.

And these are our top favorites from KBIS:

Best in Show: Miele Generation 7000 Artline 30” Combi-Steam Oven. Steam seals in flavor and nutrients fast, and it maintains a uniform temperature. It has one-degree increment setting capability, so Sous Vide cooking is possible. The appliance guides the user through intuitive settings.

Best of Kitchen: Signature 48” French Door Refrigerator with convertible drawer. One of the lower four drawers can function as a refrigerator or a freezer. Has Wi-Fi connectivity.

Impact Award: Rainstick Shower. A Wi-fi-enabled circular shower that saves 80% of water use while delivering 2 times the flow rate. Annual savings could be $500 to $700.
