On Friday, Oct. 4, some of the members of the Tennis and Pickleball Clubs celebrated the opening of our newly-refurbished sport courts with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, donuts, coffee, and games. It was a huge success, and may I say, the courts are beautiful! Many thanks to our SunBird HOA!
Our organized league play will commence on the 1st of November. This is the current schedule:
Monday – ladies doubles, 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., coordinator Melissa Craig; men’s doubles, 10 a.m. to noon, coordinator Mel Terechenok
Tuesday – men’s doubles, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., coordinator Jack Barber
Thursday – ladies doubles, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., coordinator Joan Boyle
Friday – men’s doubles, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., coordinator Jack Barber
Sign-up sheets will be posted on the tennis board at the sports courts. The possibility of a mixed doubles league will be discussed at the next tennis meeting.
We have a lot of fun events on the schedule for the new tennis season. On Nov. 2, IronOaks is hosting an all-club social event. There is a sign-up sheet on the tennis board. Then on Nov. 9, our tennis buddies from Robson Ranch will visit us here in SunBird. We still need some volunteers to help with setup and food service for this event. Please step up to help!
Reminder! On Saturday, Nov. 16, the Tennis and Pickleball Clubs are partnering to host a day of “Paddles & Racquets” fun to celebrate our newly-refurbished sport courts! There will be quick lessons offered for both sports, open play, and a “Dutch Treat” group lunch in the Horizon Room. There are sign-up sheets on the tennis board for all events, including the luncheon. (You can also email Holly Benson at [email protected].) And the best part of all, this event is open to all SunBird residents! Let the games begin!
On Nov. 23, we are celebrating the return of our snowbird members with our Welcome Back Picnic, and our first social tournament in December is scheduled for the 7th when we are hosting Trilogy. As usual, we need volunteers to make these events a huge success! Sign-up sheets are posted on the tennis bulletin board.
And now for the “Event of the Year” (drumroll). Our annual Christmas Dinner Dance (co-hosted with the SunBird Golf Club) is on Saturday, Dec. 14. We will be dancing our socks off to the great band Still Cruisin’, and Julie will be serving us all a delicious Christmas roast pork dinner with all the trimmings. Nom…nom. The time, place, and cost of ticket sales to be announced! (If you can’t eat pork, there will be a chicken option.) Everyone in sunbird is welcome!
The Community Day is on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We need volunteers to represent the Tennis Club. If you can spare one hour of your time, we can do it in shifts. Help us get new members! For those who visit our table, there will be a raffle for a $25 gift certificate to the Horizon Room. If you can help, please contact Christine Terechenok at 480-326-7346 or [email protected].
Important: We need volunteers to assume the leadership roles of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer for the 2020 tennis season. We also need volunteers for the nominating committee. We need you! Contact our president, Christine Terechenok, at 480-326-7346 if you are interested in either a board position or being on the nominating committee. You may also contact her if you are interested in joining our SunBird Tennis Club.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. in the Lakeview Room.
