The month of March featured three special events in addition to the regular Thursday Men’s Club tournaments. These were the Men’s Club Championship, a two week event that wrapped up on March 3; the Men’s and Ladies mixed gross score shoot out held on March 18 (reported separately); and the combined Men’s and Ladies scramble held on March 31. The latter two events were held in conjunction with the SunBird Ladies Golf Association.
The Men’s Club Championship, a two week combined gross score tournament, was started on February 25 and completed on March 3. A total of 60 golfers teed it up for this event. John German, with a combined score of 135, was declared the Club Champion for 2016. Gerry Tomlinson, with a score of 137, finished second while Jack Cooper at 140 was third.
The last special event of the month was the combined Men’s Golf Association and the Ladies Golf Association end of the season scramble and patio lunch and awards party held on March 31. A total of 128 men and women golfers were combined into 32 four person teams. The teams were then split into three flights. The format was a gross score only, straight scramble with one drive per person required. The first and second place teams in each flight were – Flight 1: Dee Lee, Dale Dean, Jim Seaman and Laverne Schaffer at 58 and Sue Spate, Barb Wallace, Loren Carrel and Jim Bickett at 59; Flight 2: Jackie German, Gary Whistler, Dan Moran and Glen Ketchum at 58 and Roy Comeau, Joan Leeper, Margaret McCathern and Don Hunt at 58 (tie break); Flight 3: Terry Leeper, Ray Clark, Lora Thomas and Eric Gossling at 56 and Dale Stokke, Joyce Gerber, Oscar Schroeter and Chuck Warren at 58. The play was followed by a nice lunch provided be the Horizon Room and the awarding of the SunBird Cup and Club Championship trophies to the winners from both associations as well as awards for other events. The SunBird Cup winners were Barb Dunbar and Glen Ketchum and the Club Champions were Cindy Vig and John German.
Other Men’s Club events held during the month included stroke, net play on March 10 and 24 and two man best ball on March 17. Gross/Net winners on March 10 were in Flight 1: John German, both; Flight 2: Cal Macherson, both; Flight 3: Frank Robertson, both; Flight 4: Dean Wilson and Chet Howe. The March 17 two ball, gross/net winners by flight were Gerry Tomlinson, Joe Hyduke/Cal MacPherson, Glen Ketchum; Paul Jorgensen, Ron Morgan/Larry Verbitsky, John Franklin and Gary Whistler, Fred Garmeson/Chet Howe, Earl Ferguson. The gross/net winners on March 24 by flight were Fred Nixon/Dave White, Walt Griffin/Jim Croghan, Laverne Schaffer/Bill Johnson and Gary Whistler/Chet Howe.
