The SunBird Men’s Golf Association a/k/a the Men’s Club, holds its monthly business meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. All members are encouraged to attend and non-members are also welcome to attend. The main agenda item at the meeting held on March 1 was the election of officers for the 2016–2017 season. Loren Carrel was elected Vice President and Jim Bickett, by rule, moved from Vice President to President. Re-elected were Tom Coulter, Treasurer and Norm Ott, Secretary.
The past month saw the club host several special tournaments, including the Club Championship, the Men’s Open Shoot Out, the Men’s 11 handicap and over shoot out and in conjunction with the Ladies Golf Association, the Mixed Net Shoot Out.
The Men’s Open Shoot Out was held on February 12. The qualifiers were John German, Gerry Tomlinson, Eric Gossling, Dick Tiffany, Dean Huyghebaert, Mike Malta, Jerry Chamberlin, Don Hunt, Jack Cooper and Ron Jarvis. After some exciting play by these lower handicap golfers and several chip offs to determine who would be eliminated and a replay of the ninth hole due to a tie, Don Hunt survived and was declared the winner. Finishing second and third were, Jack Cooper and Dean Huyghebaert.
Qualifying for the 11 and above handicap shoot out, held on February 26, were Dave White, Cal MacPherson, Gene Dunbar, Loren Carrel, George Richardson, Russ Bower, Howard Anderson, Jim Croghan, Jim Bickett and Bill Johnson. Exciting competition again prevailed and after a chip off on hole eight, Gene Dunbar and Cal MacPherson proceeded to the ninth hole for the final shoot out, Cal then prevailed and was declared the winner. Gene finished second and Howard Anderson was third.
The final shoot out of the period was the Mixed Net Shoot out with the Ladies Association held on March 4. After qualifications in both groups, the following pairs were entered in the tournament: Jim Croghan/Trish Carrel, Gary Whistler/Barb Wallace, John Brockish/Jean Pritchard, Russ Bower/Phyllis Haug, Frank Robertson/Judy Nixon, George Richardson/Tammy Bachofner, Fred Fraga/Sue Koslofsky, Loren Carrel/Pat Arnold, Bill Barkley/Marsha Brockish and John Valentine/Jane Sirois. In this alternate shot format, the winners were George Richardson and Tammy Bachofner. Finishing second was the team of John Brockish and Jean Pritchard; third place went to Fred Fraga and Sue Koslofsky.
The final special event of the month was the Men’s Club Championship, held on February 25 and March 3. This is a two week combined gross score event; 60 golfers teed it up for this tournament. The player with the lowest total two week score out of the 60 that started and Club Champion for 2016 was John German with a score of 135, second was Gerry Tomlinson at 137 and third was Jack Cooper in at 140. Congratulations to the winner and runners up.
