Summer is coming! Yes, those of us who live in the Valley of the Sun year-round know that life takes on a little slower pace as our days and nights begin to sizzle. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have cool and interesting options to beat the heat and stay engaged. New Adventures in Learning, our community’s lifelong learning organization, offers a variety of classes in June and July to challenge each of us to step up our mental game and build brain-power as we enjoy the more relaxed rhythm that our summer days offer.
“A wide variety of topics, from history to science, finance and literature, even games and the benefits of meditation are among the classes being presented this summer through lectures, roundtable discussions, and book clubs,” explained Wayne Wright, the organization’s president. He added, “New Adventures classes are sometimes fun, often thought-provoking and always informative.”
Consider the following class description: “One hundred years ago this summer, the bustling mining town of Bisbee, Arizona, experienced one of the more egregious and extensive violations of civil liberties in American history. But the incident involving mass deportation of 1,100 copper miners is largely forgotten. It shouldn’t be.”
Does the brief description above pique your interest? If so, as a New Adventures member, sign up for ‘Bisbee 1917’ to learn more. And be sure to mark your calendar now so you don’t miss the special summer semester registration open house on Wednesday, May 10, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Sun Lakes Center.
If you become a member before May 10, you’ll receive a packet of information, including the full list of summer classes, so you can decide on your favorites before you attend the open house to register.
An all-volunteer membership organization, New Adventures in Learning is affiliated with the Chandler-Gilbert Community College and is a great value. If you become a member for the summer semester, you get an extra semester included in your annual membership. Annual dues are $50 a year. (There is an additional $15 college registration fee per semester in which a member enrolls in a class.)
Throughout the year, New Adventures’ classes are held in the college’s Sun Lakes Center, which provides state-of-the-art and comfortable classrooms, conveniently located at the corner of Alma School and Riggs Roads.
