Fight Weeds with Pre-Emergents

Bonnie Marcus, Community Administrator

Pre-emergent herbicide is an application to the soil surface. The herbicides kill germinating seeds of most annual and perennial weeds. This application should be applied prior to anticipated flushes of weeds, e.g., winter rains or summer monsoons. Drift from pre-emergent herbicides does not damage growing plants but may prevent seeds from germinating.

Preventing the weeds from emerging in the first place will not only save you money, but also the time spent removing them. The chemical(s) used to treat the weeds once they have emerged can be significantly higher than the preventative, pre-emergent chemical, hence costing you more for treatment. Plan on scheduling regular pre-emergent treatments every six months. This will not only save you time and money, but you and your neighbors will enjoy your beautiful landscaping year round—weed-free!
