The Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Clubs combined for their second shootout of the season. This event, a gross score only contest, was played on March 18. The 10 lowest gross score qualifiers from each club were paired to form 10 two person teams. The format for this tournament had the men teeing off on the odd holes and the ladies on the even holes and then playing alternate shots into the cup. The team with the highest score or the chip farthest from the cup in the case of a tie breaking chip off on each hole was eliminated. The two remaining teams then played the final hole for the championship.
The qualifying teams were John German and Phyliss Haug, Gerry Tomlinson and Jackie Huyghebaert, Bob Johns and Pat Arnold, Fred Nixon and Joyce Gerber, Al Lundeen and Lora Thomas, Bob Gerber and Heather Verbitsky, Bob Schoenwald and Sue Koslofsky, Ron Morgan and Melissa Craig, Wes Terry and Cindy Vig and Dave White and Karen Gilmore. After some exciting play by all of the participants and three chip offs to settle ties, the survivors and winners of the championship were Dave White and Karen Gilmore. Finishing second and third respectively were the teams of Bob Gerber and Heather Verbitsky and Al Lundeen and Lora Thomas. Congratulations to the winners and to all of the participants for an exciting afternoon of golf.
Shootouts take many people to organize and run the event, starting with the Men’s and Ladies shoot out chairpersons, Jerry Lingen and Jackie Huyghebaert, the on course scorers, marshals, water providers etc. There are two people, however, who deserve some special recognition for their continuing and long service to the shootout events. They are Sam Curatolo, the on course announcer who keeps everyone informed and Connie Franklin, the on course official who not only interprets rules as needed but also selects some difficult locations for tie breaking chip offs. A special thanks to all who make these events a success.
