Distracted Walking Can Lead to Accidents

You may have seen members of the Rules Committee out there logging vehicle traffic here in SunBird. We have released the data we obtained and our plans for future vehicle safety initiatives. One of the concerns we noted was the SunBird Stop (think California Rolling Stop). The SunBird Stop raised concerns for pedestrians out enjoying the great walking weather we have. We are suggesting some things to think about before you go out for sunshine and exercise.

Distracted walking, while comprising only 5% to 10% of all accidents, accounts for about 40% of all pedestrian deaths. Guess what age group is most likely to be in that 40%. Yup, us! Since a number of us have found ourselves scrambling off the road and into the rocks to get to safety, we decided this reminder might be of help.

Without sidewalks, we walk on the road facing oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, vehicles, especially those making right-hand turns, may not expect oncoming traffic from the right and may not see us. Our curving roads, landscaping, and parked vehicles can all be impediments to being seen. Unfortunately, the distractions we encounter as pedestrians (talking with friends, looking at scenery, listening to music, using our devices) may add to our enjoyment but can compromise safety.

What we suggest is this: Before heading out on that walk, think about staying safe and how to avoid becoming a statistic. Be especially mindful as you approach intersections. Even if you can see a vehicle around the corner, they may not see you. If you encounter an intersection that you believe to be of particular concern, let us know. We like smiling to neighbors and greeting them on our walks and want to keep you all around, enjoying the great weather.
