SunBird is a wonderful place to live, with its open spaces, shade trees, lakes, and grassy areas. We’re not the only ones who appreciate it—many animals do as well.
In the past, stray or feral cats have made their way into SunBird and taken up residence. Unfortunately, when food is left outside, it makes the area even more attractive and encourages cats and other animals to stay and multiply.
Previously, in coordination with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control and other cat rescue organizations, stray and feral cats were humanely trapped and transported to sanctuaries or shelters. Currently, however, both Arizona Humane Society and Maricopa County Animal Care and Control—as well as their partner sanctuaries—are not accepting cats. Without available placement options, SunBird is limited in what can be done.
Here are some ways residents can help deter cats from their yards:
* Do not feed them.
* Consider planting citronella or other plants that deter cats. Citronella also has the added benefit of repelling insects. Your local nursery can help you choose the best options.
* Sprinkle herbs such as rosemary, lavender, lemon thyme, or oregano around your patio. These have strong scents and textures that cats tend to avoid.
* Do not leave food outside unattended for your own pets.
* Secure all garbage by bagging and tying it, and keep it in containers with lids closed.
* Maintain a clean landscape by removing overgrowth or areas where animals may seek shelter.
By working together, we can help keep SunBird clean, safe, and enjoyable.
