Mary Pilon, Publicity
As we say goodbye to 2019, we also have to say goodbye to two of our dear Irish Club members, George Shiel and Don McMullen. Both men were long-time and dearly-loved members who volunteered a lot of time and effort into making the Irish Club so successful.
George was our president for several years, and he was responsible for beginning some new activities and traditions, along with arranging for our monthly luncheons at local Irish restaurants. George had a contagious laugh, a twinkle in his eyes, and a smile on his face at all times. George will be deeply missed.
Don was also a longtime member of the club, whose effort in heading the committee that delivered the SunBird News to the residents for many years, which was very much appreciated. He had this commitment down to an art—he knew when to pick up the papers, call the paperboys, and distribute them. Our club benefited greatly from his work and devotion to our club. Don was a friend to everyone and was loved by us all.
I wanted to devote this month’s column to these gentlemen whom we were all honored to know. Rest in peace, and know that you will be forever loved and remembered by SunBird Irish Club.
