“Airships: Giants of the Interwar Period” will be the topic of a presentation to the Sun Lakes Aero Club gathering on Monday, April 18, at the Sun Lakes Country Club Navajo Room.
The event will begin with coffee and camaraderie at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The speaker will be Col. Jim Evans (USAF ret.), noted aviation historian, whose several previous appearances before the group have been extremely well received.
The presentation will start with the story of the beginnings of lighter-than-air vehicles prior to and during World War I. “The appeal of lighter-than-air flight has been strong from the 1700s and continues even until the present day,” says Evans. In a way, airships can be compared to the SST Concord of recent days—clearly not available to everyone, but fascinating nonetheless.
This will be the Sun Lakes Aero Club’s final gathering for the 2021-22 year. Activities will begin again in the fall, with sessions scheduled the third Monday from November of 2022 through April of 2023.
