The SunBird Men’s Golf Association meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the Clubhouse Ballroom. It is at the March meeting each year that officers for the coming year are elected. At this March’s meeting, Dave Sims, chairman of the nominating committee, presented the following slate of nominees; Jim Bickett, Vice President, Tom Coulter, Treasurer and Norm Ott, Secretary. With no further nominations from the floor, they were elected unanimously. Sam Curatolo, this year’s Vice President, assumed the role of President for the coming year.
The month of February and into the first week of March saw the club host several exciting tournaments including, in addition to regular weekly events, the Club Championship, the Men’s Open Shoot Out, the Men’s 11 plus handicap shoot out and in conjunction with the Ladies Association, the Mixed Net Shoot Out. Following are the results of these events.
Shoot Outs consist of 10 qualifiers who start out on the first hole. One player is eliminated on each hole by having the highest score or in case of a tie a chip off. The final two players play for the championship on the ninth hole.
The Men’s Open Shoot Out was held on February 13. The qualifiers were Jack Cooper, Bob Gerber, Gary Hall, Dick Tiffany, Eric Gossling, Ron Jarvis, Dean Huyghebaert, Jim Seaman, Jim Bickett, and Gerry Tomlinson. The first, second and third place finishes went to Jack Cooper, Bob Gerber and Dick Tiffany respectively.
The 11 and Over Handicap Shoot Out was held on February 27. Qualifiers for this net score event were Gary Metzger, George Richardson, Loren Carrel, Paul Carlson, Mel Flinkman, Rich Neidrauer, Jerry Adams, Don Hunt, Dan Carroll and Gordon Lee. Paul Carlson was the winner of this event with Don Hunt, second and Dan Carroll, third.
The final shoot out event was hosted by both the Men’s and Ladies Associations; 10 teams consisting of a man and a woman played an alternate shot format. The qualifiers were Loren Wallace/Nancy Ott, Gary Metzger/Joyce Gerber, Fred Nixon/Lore Schaefer, Gary Whistler/Deb Verhaeghe, Dean Huyghebaert/Barb Dunbar, Bob Johns/Jane Sirois, Jim Seaman/Trish Carrel, Bob Gerber/Jackie Huyghebaert, Eric Gossling/Tammy Bachofner and Bob Schoenwald/Barb Wallace. The order of finish for this event was first, Bob Schoenwald/Barb Wallace, second, Dean Huyghebaert/Barb Dunbar and third, Eric Gossling/Tammy Bachofner.
The final special event was the Club Championship, a two week total gross score tournament held on February 26 and March 5. Jack Cooper, with a total score of 126 (60, 66), was crowned Club Champion for 2015. Finishing second was Bob Gerber at 130 (66, 64) and Dale Stokke finished third at 132 (67, 65). The first three finishers in Flight 2 were Jim Croghan (139), Don Hunt (143) and Bob Johns (143); in Flight 3, Dan Carroll (150), Loren Wallace (152) and Vince Budinas (153) and in Flight 4, Ray Fuller (164), Gary Larsen (164) and John Valentine (171).
