One of the most common things I hear when out in the community is, “I don’t know anything about the Rangers.” So, as a proud member of the Sun Lakes Company Rangers, I’m thrilled to share the storied history of the Arizona Rangers with you. Our journey began back in 1901 when a group of brave men rode into the Wild West with a mission to bring order to a land that was as wild as a tumbleweed in a dust storm.
In those early days, Arizona was a territory known for its lawlessness. Bandits and rustlers roamed free, and the need for a dedicated law enforcement body was as clear as a desert sky. That’s when the Arizona Rangers were born, inspired by the legendary Texas Rangers. Under the leadership of Captain Burton C. Mossman, we set out to tame the untamable.
We started small, just 14 men strong, but what we lacked in numbers, we made up for in grit and determination. Our deep understanding of the rugged terrain and our mobility made us a force to be reckoned with. One of our proudest achievements was curbing cattle rustling, a rampant problem that threatened the livelihoods of local ranchers. Our efforts not only protected the community but also helped stabilize the region’s economy.
But it wasn’t all smooth riding. We faced our fair share of challenges, especially from local politicians who saw us as a threat to their power. Despite the political wrangling, we stayed true to our mission, adapting to the ever-changing landscape of law enforcement.
In 1909 the Arizona Rangers were disbanded, but our legacy lived on. Fast forward to 1957, and we were resurrected as a volunteer organization, dedicated to preserving our history and supporting local law enforcement agencies. Today, as Sun Lakes Company Rangers, we continue to uphold the values of bravery and dedication that defined our predecessors.
We’re more than just a historical footnote; we’re an active part of the community. You’ll find us patrolling the Sun Lakes community, participating in local events, providing security at public gatherings, and offering support to law enforcement agencies across the state. Our presence is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Old West and the timeless values of justice and service.
As you, the readers of the Sun Lakes Splash, reflect on our history, remember that the story of the Arizona Rangers is not just a tale of the past. It’s a living legacy that continues to inspire and protect. So, next time you see us out there, tip your hat and know that we’re there for you, ensuring that the spirit of the Wild West remains alive and well.
