SunBird Garden Club donates to “SunBird Helping SunBird” fund

Toni Greisiger, Publicity Chair

This past summer, Garden Club member Gudie Huffman worked with SunBird Golf Club Superintendent Marc Francoeur, and she learned that many of the PVC pipes leading to various landscaped areas are in need of repair and replacement. Our members voted to donate $1,222.00 towards this project, and a check was presented to the SunBird Golf Club at their November meeting.

Our club also voted to donate $1,000 to the “SunBird Helping SunBird” fund, which helps to pay for outside property maintenance for SunBird residents who are experiencing health or financial issues. The check was presented to SunBird Golf Resort Manager Layne Varney, who manages this fund.

The Garden Club sold an assortment of plants and cacti at Community Day. These were all potted and grown during the past summer by Garden Club members. Mary Regan and Gudie Huffman planted red geraniums at the fountain before Community Day.

Our club also held an annual Clean Up day prior to Community Day, and we trimmed, cleaned and weeded landscaped areas around the clubhouse.

Our January meeting will feature SunBird resident Barb Dunbar who will be sharing her Tower Gardens of vegetable plants. This eco-friendly tower garden fits easily on any sunny patio, using 20-25 plants. No garden tools, weeding or costly preparation is required. Also, Barb promises that no “green thumb” is needed. Please join us January 11 at 9:00 a.m. to learn all about this fun idea to try on your own patio.

We meet the second Friday of every month in the West Ballroom at 9:00 a.m., and new members or visitors are always welcome.
