Greenskeeper Golf Tournament and Silent Auction: March 20

Norm Ott

The annual Greenskeeper Tournament, sponsored by SunBird Golf Course Superintendent Brendan Waddell and his Turf Crew, will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021. On this date, there will also be a Silent Auction.

Over the last eight years, a live auction has been held in conjunction with the CRAB Tournament. These two events, especially the auction, have generated significant funds for the benefit of the golf course. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions and associated gathering limits, it is not possible to hold the live auction on the clubhouse patio as in previous years. In its place, the tournament committee will hold a silent auction. Items to be auctioned off will be on display on tables placed along the side of Waterview, starting at 7 a.m., and will remain there during the tournament. All members of the SunBird community are invited to come and bid on items of their choice by signing the bid sheets with their bid amount. As usual, the success of any auction is dependent on the donations of items from the community, both golfers and non-golfers alike, and in their participation in bidding and buying said items. Please contact John or Marsha Brockish at 480-759-0742 if you would like to donate an item to be auctioned.

Since 2013, the annual CRAB Tournament, which is a team event consisting of teams representing the Canadian, Roadrunners, Americans, and the Bandits, has been held on the day following the live auction. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, especially travel restrictions affecting our Canadian friends, and the potential lack of players for all of the teams, the tournament committee decided to cancel it. Instead, as mentioned above, the Greenskeeper Tournament has been coupled with the silent auction for this year’s fundraising event.

The tournament will be a four-person scramble, men, women, and mixed, with the usual mulligans for sale, coffee and donuts at sign in, a box lunch, and Brendan may have a surprise or two on the course during play. So, if you haven’t already done so, get your foursomes together and sign up in the Pro Shop for this important fundraising event for the SunBird Golf Course.
