Unity: going back to the basics

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a spiritual community seeking a peaceful, loving and healthful way to live through affirmative prayer, meditation, healthful life style and activities that promote education, friendship, fun and service. We follow the teachings of Jesus and other Masters of love and wisdom. Our Sunday celebration is at 9:30 a.m. in the Arts and Crafts Room at Sun Lakes Country Club which is located a long block south of Riggs Road on Sun Lakes Blvd. in the furthest building south in the club. Rev. Debbi Adams gives us our lesson, and Francine Alexander is our talented music and choir director. We welcome all visitors and hope you will stay for coffee and fellowship after the service.

You are not alone if you are wondering, “What does Unity believe?” To explain that would encompass much more than this short article could contain, but here is an abbreviated version of our teachings which were set down by Connie Bazzy Fillmore, the great-granddaughter of Charles and Myrtle Fillmore who were founders of our New Thought tradition in the 1880s. We have no dogma or doctrine, but these Five Basic Principles are accepted and taught in all Unity churches: 1) There is only One Power and One Presence in all the universe and it is God, and it is absolute Good and everywhere present; 2) Our essence is of God; therefore, we are inherently good; 3) We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind; 4) Through affirmative prayer and meditation, we connect with God and bring out the good in our lives; 5) Through thoughts, words and actions, we live the Truth we know.

You may see these five principles expressed in different ways, sometimes for children and teens, sometimes for adults or in words with a more modern application, but they all mean the same thing. Spiritual Principle transforms your life when you apply it. Your spiritual practice becomes a part of your daily life in thought, word, feeling and action. You become a more loving, joy-filled, peaceful person and the world reciprocates.
