The SunBird Men’s Golf Association, aka The Men’s Club, will hold its first regular business meeting of the 2018–2019 season on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. President Dan Carroll will call the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. in the east end of the clubhouse ballroom. The agenda will include plans and discussion regarding the upcoming weekly tournament schedule, fees for the coming year and other items of interest. Of course, there will be fresh coffee and donuts. Subsequent business meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in the ballroom, through April.
Referring to the article in the October paper, there are three new programs that will be included in the Men’s Club activities this coming season. The first one is the Player of the Year Award, which will be based on a member’s participation in weekly tournaments and on scoring performance. Also new will be an optional gross/net eclectic (continuous) score card. This is an optional game that will cost $1 to enter each week. Once a player enters the first time, his eclectic score card is started. Each time the player participates, he is eligible to change the score on any hole with a better score that he has carded that day. There are 13 events scheduled for this optional game. The five best net and gross scores at the end of the contest will be awarded prizes. Lastly, a new event called the MacPherson Challenge will be held. This event is named in honor of Cal MacPherson who passed away. Cal was a longtime member of the Men’s Club, a former member of the SunBird Golf Club Board of Directors and a jack of all trades, having spent countless hours in helping with maintenance activities on the course. The event will be similar in format to the USA/Canadian Conley Cup. Players will qualify based on their Player of the Year points.
The SunBird Men’s Club is open to all golfers, regardless of skill level, who would like to participate in organized and regularly-scheduled weekly tournaments that are held each Thursday morning. Tournaments include gross/net stroke play, scrambles and other events at the discretion of the tournament committee. Weekly play is encouraged but not mandatory. Participation is a great way to play competitive golf at your level and make new friends.
Membership in the club, which is required to participate, includes membership in the Arizona Golf Association and in the GHIN handicap system. For questions, please contact Fred Garmeson, membership chairman, at 480-695-9363, or you are invited to attend any of the business meetings.
