Lions Donation Collections
The SunBird Lions are collecting several items that can make a meaningful difference for people and organizations in need. Please consider donating any of the following:
* Eyeglasses, hearing aids, and cell phones: Donate used eyeglasses, hearing aids, or old cell phones at the HOA Office. Donated glasses are often sent to other countries, where they can help improve someone’s sight and quality of life. Information is removed from cell phones before they are donated.
* Towels, blankets, and bedding: If you are cleaning out closets, the SunBird Lions will collect these items and donate them to the Animal Shelter. To arrange a donation, please call Arlene Block at 602-618-5861.
* Non-perishable food: During the warm summer months, the need for food in our community continues. Collection bins are available in the Poster Room for non-perishable food items. Donations are delivered to AZCEND for distribution to people in need.
Honoring Fred Garmeson
In mid-June, Lions from across the state met to review plans for the coming year, take part in training, and receive awards for their work over the past year. The convention’s red, white, and blue theme honored the nation’s 250th anniversary, and Fred Garmeson joined the celebration dressed as Uncle Sam.
The SunBird Lions Club proudly congratulates Past District Governor Fred Garmeson on receiving a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship at the convention. Presented through the Lions Clubs International Foundation, this distinguished award recognizes individuals whose generosity supports humanitarian service projects in local communities and around the world.
Fred had already earned his Melvin Jones Fellowship and has now reached an extraordinary milestone: 20 Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship awards. This accomplishment reflects his lasting dedication, generosity, and commitment to helping others.
Thank you, Past District Governor Fred, for all you do for the SunBird Lions Club, our community, and so many others. Your leadership, service, and generosity continue to inspire us. Congratulations once again!
Thank You for the Flag Program
We recently received this note from a SunBird resident.
Dear Lions Club Members:
Thank you for the Flag Program!
It is a blessing to live where our flag is displayed with pride. I want you all to know how truly grateful I am for all your hard work and dedication to our community.
If you are interested in participating in the SunBird Lions Flag Program, you can pick up an application in the Billiards Room or at the HOA Office.
The Pink Flamingos Are Not Afraid of the Heat
The SunBird Lions’ flock of Pink Flamingos is ready to help make any occasion fun and memorable. The flock has even been seen welcoming residents back home, and they are perfectly comfortable visiting a “Snowbird”—no bird squabbles expected!
To surprise a friend returning to SunBird or celebrate a birthday or anniversary, contact Jan at 602-568-0511. She will guide the flock to its next roosting place. It is a fun way to support the SunBird Lions and brighten someone’s day.
Interested in What Lions Are All About?
The Lions meet for lunch on the third Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in the Horizon Room. Although regular meetings are on pause, these luncheons still include introductions of new members and thank-you notes from charities that have received donations from the club’s charities account.
These gatherings are a great way to meet SunBird Lions and learn more about the club. For more information, please contact Jana Haeffner at 815-761-7243.
