Finally, the days of summer are starting to be a thing of the past, and the Short Line Model Railroad Club returns in full swing on September 9. The club will be meeting in the Lakeview Room at the SunBird Golf Resort at 9:30 a.m. The Lakeview Room is located on the lower level of the Community Center, close to the area of the elevator. As always, interested parties and new members are welcome to attend any of our meetings.
Over the years, we have found out that once we reach September, things tend to move out on the fast track once we reach Labor Day. For starters, starting out on the first Saturday of October, several of the local communities will be holding their annual Community Days, and every Saturday in October that follows we will have something going on locally. Keep your calendars handy. There’s still more. On November 8, which is a Wednesday, the SunBird Community will be holding its annual Community Day with much to see and refreshments available on the patio off the main ballroom. I suggest you keep a close eye on your bulletin boards and the local papers for times and locations. On October 28, Neighbors Who Care is planning its Fifth Annual Fair right off Riggs Road, which you won’t want to miss. It will be a great opportunity to meet those from all walks in the community and enjoy the day where there will be live music, games, a car show, trains and a food court, plus the support of our local fire and police departments serving the area.
For you railroad enthusiasts, there are many opportunities right up to the end of the year with a variety of things to enjoy. If you’re active in the hobby, several “Train Only” swap meets are typically available in the fall. These are open to the public, and all are welcome. It’s a fun way to pass a couple of hours and a chance to purchase some of those things you can’t live without at a reasonable price. Close by, we have the Chandler Railroad Museum, which I believe is only open on weekends. A short trip up to Scottsdale will take you up to McCormick/Stillman Railroad Park where there are rides and activities for the children and the young at heart at their annual Rail Fair Weekend on the 7th and 8th of October. This two-day annual event is sponsored by the City of Scottsdale. You will also be treated to the operating displays of many of the area Model Railroad clubs that have a variety of operating model railroad models spread around the scenic surroundings.
