Rotary Club of Sun Lakes Supports Gila River Indian Community School

Dr. Honora Norton, RCSL Public Image Director

The Rotary Club of Sun Lakes is honored to support Gila River Indian Community Casa Blanca School. Members have supported the school through AWIM (A World in Motion) jetcar mentoring/competitions, library book donations, and gifts of lawn picnic tables/umbrellas. Sun Lakes Rotary Foundation 2000’s Board President Dr. Elaine Ralls presented the school’s principal, Kim Franklin, with a $1,359 check directed towards the purchase of library books. RCSL Rotarian Debbie Bailey ordered 70 books and gifted them directly to the school. Each book was stamped with a “Donated by the Rotary Club of Sun Lakes” with the Rotary logo.

Additionally, at a recent RCSL meeting, Andrew McBride, Director of Engineering at Gila River Indian Community Utility Authority, presented the school’s principal a check for $500, and RCSL gifted another $500 to be directed toward the purchase of two lawn picnic tables and umbrellas. Principal Kim Franklin was excited for school children to be able to read new books at the new lawn tables on a beautiful fall day.

Rotary Club of Sun Lakes Recycle Collection Exceeds 10,000 Pounds

Dr. Honora Norton, RCSL Public Image Director

Per Rotary Club of Sun Lakes (RCSL) Rotarian Debbie Bailey, the fourth RCSL Electronics Recycle Collection Day at Sun Lakes was a success. Three truckloads of equipment (10,432 pounds) was collected. Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology, otherwise known as AZStRUT, a 501(c)(3) started in 1997 by Intel and Motorola, will refurbish and distribute the equipment to Arizona schools and nonprofits that will benefit. AZStRUT started partnering with nonprofits such as RCSL and with Valley schools’ computer repair programs to assist in the refurbishing efforts.

The event’s chairperson Debbie Bailey and RCSL Club President Ed Anderson extend a grateful thank you to all the volunteers and donors who made this event a success.

Rotary Club of Sun Lakes (RCSL) Rotarians Ed Anderson, Helvi Winter, Judi Edmonds, and Roger Edmonds attended the 2025 Mexico-USA Friendship Conference and Global Grants Exchange in Yuma, Ariz. Seventy-two clubs were represented, with close to 200 Rotarians from USA and Mexico attending. Twenty-six projects were reviewed with a value of $2.1 million. Fourteen of those projects were fully funded by the end of the conference.

RCSL made monetary contributions to 11 of the projects totaling $3,000. The Rotary Club of Yuma held a welcome dinner and hosted both a season-themed party.

This conference, now in its 25th year, is the ideal way for Rotary Clubs to get involved in Rotary International Foundation global grants. From providing clean water to promoting peace worldwide, global grants bring service project ideas to life. Attendees experienced fellowship at its finest, with clubs from Mexico and Arizona partnering together to fund global grants at this unique, project-focused event.
