The vibrant halls of New Adventures in Learning resonate with the sounds of budding Spanish speakers, a testament to the program’s commitment to lifelong learning. In the Beginning Spanish class, a diverse group, ranging from 55 to 92, are embracing the challenge of a new language or reawakening skills from decades past.

Lisa Wright, a student in the class, shares, “Being retired, I needed to find an enjoyable and challenging interest for some of my time.” The class provides that balance, with an interactive, conversational format that builds confidence. Lynn Kepford appreciates the supportive environment, saying, “I really appreciate being able to practice and receive feedback on my spoken Spanish in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.”

The class not only helps students regain skills but also fosters community and connection. Donald Whaley, 92, says, “I’m taking this class because I want to be able to communicate with Spanish-speaking people. It allows me to have more friends and more understanding between us. This is a fun class to learn Spanish.”

Ken Roane shares Donald’s goal and enthusiasm: “I wanted to expand my ability to converse in Spanish both when I visit Mexico on vacation and when I’m at home here in Arizona. It shows the people whose first language is Spanish that I care and respect them.”

This summer NAIL will be offering a two-session class focusing on Spanish for Travelers. The Beginning Spanish class will resume in the fall.
