Marvelous Mah Jongg is similar to regular American Mah Jongg and requires a separate card. The rules and some of the categories are the same, even and odd numbers, 369, consecutive runs, and quints. The differences? Words can be spelled, such as JAC A LLL O PPP EEE (jackalope)—J is a joker, A is any tile including a joker, LLL is a pung of any upside down 7, O is a white dragon, and then three east winds.
The words chosen are based on the Chinese New Year, which was the Year of the Rabbit in 2023.
We play on the first and third Friday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. at Poolside in Oakwood. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected]. I will be happy to teach you how to play this version, but you must already know how to play American Mah Jongg.
