Recently, the Basha High School LEO club and the SunBird Lions sponsored the First annual Hoop Wars Basketball Tournament. The Star Wars themed tournament pitted the Rebel Alliance vs. the Empire. Teams were made up of students, teachers and a couple of ringers. The Empire won 104-101. At half time, the Lions held a long shot contest with the winner getting a free car. The contestants had three shots from each of four places on the court: the foul line, the three point circle, almost half court and half court. Brent Rincon of the school administrative staff made a shot from almost half court and won the free car – a nine inch 1957 Chevrolet.
The proceeds from the tournament are going to sponsor a child to go to Lions Camp Tatiyee. Lions Camp Tatiyee is a camp for special needs children and adults in Show Low, AZ.
