SunBird Golf Club Board of Directors
It’s that time of year again … when golf courses in Arizona begin planning their annual overseeding with rye grass. Our base grass, which is bermudagrass, loves the heat but goes dormant in the fall. If left alone, the bermudagrass turns brown from November through May, the exact time when most of us are in SunBird ready to be greeted by a healthy, green golf course at our front entrance and throughout our community.
Rye grass is an annual, meaning it lives only one season and then dies. But what a season it has! It thrives in cooler temperatures and provides a lush, green carpet for our golfers and residents to enjoy. Then in June, it dies and the bermudagrass springs back to life, taking over for June through October, and the cycle continues.
The whole process is expensive, and we expect seed costs alone this year to be over $50,000. Because of increasing costs for seed, gasoline, and fertilizer, the Golf Club Board has decided to overseed tees, fairways, and greens only.
We are asking that you consider donating to our annual Green-Up Fund. Last year, residents donated over $12,000, all of which went to purchase seed. Every dollar helps in our quest to keep our community course healthy and green. Whether you chose to donate $50, $200, $1,000, or any amount above or between, we thank you for your generosity and support. If you would like to contribute, please send a check made out to SunBird Golf Club, to 6240 S. SunBird Blvd., Chandler, AZ 85249, or call the Golf Shop at 480-883-0820. As always, we welcome your ideas and suggestions. Thank you in advance for your donation, and we look forward to seeing you in SunBird!
