Desert Threads Will Meet September 13

Several members show some beautiful Community Service quilts they made for various charity organizations that Desert Threads supports.

The first meeting for our new year will be Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the Lecture Hall located in the Cottonwood Computer Training Center. This is a new location for Desert Threads meetings and provides a larger room for our gathering. The meeting starts at 9:30 a.m., but doors will be open at 9 a.m. for sign-in and socializing. We encourage everyone to come check out our new location, our new board, and the upcoming activities.

During the heat of summer, members keep busy quilting for our fundraisers and charity projects. Our Opportunity Quilt (aka raffle quilt) helps increase our treasury to purchase supplies for our charity quilts and to host lectures from quilt teachers. Tickets will be available at the Open House events in Cottonwood on Oct. 7 and IronOaks on Oct. 14 (in the mornings). Also, there is a Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Sun Lakes Country Club Navajo Room. Tickets for the Opportunity Quilt will be available to purchase. In addition, there will be quilts of various sizes for beds, lounging, table runners, or large totes that can be purchased. We are always happy to receive donations of money and quilt supplies as well.

Desert Threads board members met this summer to define activities for this season. Diana Jones will lead a Block-of-the-Month activity. Diana says this is great for everyone (including beginners, novice, and advanced quilters) to learn new block designs and best practices for sewing beautiful quilts. Cindy Templeton arranges for our meeting lectures, with some fascinating topics planned. You won’t want to miss the monthly meetings. Maryellen Swanson has lined up classes for us, including free-motion quilting by Mona Adams at the 35th Avenue Sew and Vac shop in November and, in October, an all-day class by Peggy Morris on rough edge applique in the IronOaks Sewing Room. The chapter has a couple of quilting challenges, too. Come to our meetings to learn how you can complete quilts to enter the challenges and win prizes.

Desert Threads is a chapter of the Arizona Quilters Guild—see www.arizonaquiltersguild.org. A “Fun Day” takes place on Saturday, Oct. 21. Our chapter meets the second Wednesday for the months September through May in the morning, at the Lecture Hall in Cottonwood’s Computer Training Center. For more information, come to a meeting or send an email with your name, email ID, and phone number to [email protected] or [email protected].
