Desert Threads Enjoyed Another Fun Year

Desert Threads officers and chairs from the past year

Sue Bart

The May 10 meeting was the annual meeting and the last one for our current year, July 2023 through June 2024. Desert Threads quilters had a fun year, thanks to the hard work of the board of officers. The meeting featured some excellent trunk shows of applique quilts and information by Nancy Starkey and Jean McMahon. Jean showed her awesome heirloom quilts she hand appliqued. She will be teaching classes next season. The meeting also encompassed the introduction of four elected officers, the new and returning committee chairs, and approval of next year’s budget.

Desert Threads does not hold general meetings during June, July, and August when so many members are out of town. However, Sew Days and other impromptu activities will continue for those in town in the IronOaks Sewing Room. Members will also gather on our regular meeting days (second Wednesday mornings) in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center for quilting and socializing during the summer months. Meetings will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m. for registration. Continue to find articles about Desert Threads and quilting during the summer in the Sun Lakes Splash each month. We welcome anyone who is interested in quilting.

Desert Threads members enjoyed the variety of lectures and trunk shows, plus a grand party, during this past year at the monthly in-person general meetings. New members this year made new quilting friends or renewed old friendships. Many interesting classes covered various techniques from curved piecing, bag making with zippers, sewing accurate seams and perfect points, sewing a block-of-the-month each month, and working on community service projects for charity or completing challenge quilts and unfinished projects. Lots of members volunteered at the AQG (Arizona Quilters Guild) Quilt Show or participated in the online lectures and workshops from AQG and the in-person Fun Day—significant valuable perks from AQG.

If you would like to join Desert Threads or renew for next year, now is the time to do that, before June 30. We are a chapter of the Arizona Quilters Guild and open to anyone interested in quilting from the East Valley area. As such, we pay dues for AQG on their website and also for Desert Threads. Renewing before June 30 provides a discount on the membership fee. For more information, send an email to [email protected] (note the two “T”s). Also check out www.arizonaquiltersguild.org.
