Decor Trends for Today and the Future

Depending on your taste, budget, and future plans, you may be shopping for the decorating and remodeling trends that are going to be hot for 2025 and beyond. If bringing in new items means that you’ll have to remove their current counterparts, here are some styles and trends that are considered past their prime. Remember, classic never goes out of style. It just needs a refresh on occasion. Here are two examples of very big kitchen trends. One was and still is a classic, and the other is a totally out-of-style pariah.

Classic: A white kitchen, as you will see, is becoming less popular. However (and this is a big however), white kitchens are classic, so they will always be in style! Just add a refreshing pop of color or paint.

Pariah: The other example is the ‘70s gold and green kitchen. Yes, my mom had this. It was called avocado green and harvest gold. We were the envy of our neighbors for a short while. Once a trend and never a classic, it has been out of style for over 40 years. And can we all say hurray to that?!

White kitchens have been around for almost 10 years, so many homeowners and builders are doing colorful updates. While ombre and blue kitchens have been surfacing during the past three years, you can take a shortcut by converting to a retro-style black and white kitchen. Looking at high-end model homes shows the trends for now and the future.

Gray rooms and furniture took over a few years ago, but take a look at Facebook Marketplace and resale shops, and you’ll probably find dozens of gray sofas and chairs for sale. Thankfully, homeowners have reasonably free rein when replacing gray tones, as both neutral and striking colors are making the news. I frequently add splashes of color throughout my home by watching to see Pantone’s color of the year. It is a simple way to update and refresh without spending a lot of money. See www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year.

Animal prints may always be a fashion favorite, but many interior decorators are putting them out to pasture. If you can’t bear to be 100% critter-free, keep the smaller items, such as throw pillows.

Sliding barn doors were popular when farmhouse styles were the rage, and while they’re still selling, they will eventually date your home. If you can’t think of an alternative, be creative by adding wall decor or even painting them.

Word signs and stencils were seen in practically every home for several years, but this trend can make an otherwise-attractive room appear dated. Instead, choose art and wall decorations that complement each room.
