Cheers Social Group Activities

Cheers members on a group outing to the Basha Museum and Western Art Collection in Chandler, Ariz.

Cheers Trip Opportunities: Cheers members went on an outing to the Basha Museum in Chandler, which is located at Basha corporate offices and is free to the public. The museum features the work of western artists, including sketches, watercolors, oil paintings, and bronze sculptures. Among the highlights are special galleries for baskets and various art forms from Native American artists. In addition to the art, there are displays of an extensive gun collection and personal correspondence between Eddie Basha and several of the artists.

Cheers members are also looking forward to the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, Calif., July 26 through July 28. The Pageant is a remarkable presentation of “living pictures” in which the cast recreates classical and contemporary artwork through innovative make-up and costumes, intricate sets, state-of-the-art lighting, live narration, and a full pit orchestra. Attendance at the Sawdust Festival art show is also included.

Cheers travel itineraries are open to all, since we utilize and partner with licensed travel agents. For more information, call Richard Lewin at 609-332-3915 or Donna Clucky at Free Spirit Vacations at 480-926-4447, Ext. 2.

Monthly Wine Tasting: On the third Wednesday of each month, a club member hosts a wine tasting and potluck dinner in their home. Advance registration is required, and an $8 fee per person is collected to provide funds for the purchase of a variety of wines, selected and presented by the host/hostess. Lorene Roberts serves as the activity leader, supporting and assisting monthly hosts.

Golf Group: The Cheers golf group enjoys Friday golf on all the courses of Sun Lakes, as well as surrounding public courses. This month we’ve played Springfield, SunBird, Bear Creek, and Sun Lakes Country Club. Given participation of 10 or more per week, excellent weather, and decreasing seasonal rates, we plan to add additional courses.

Congratulations to our “birdie makers” this month: Joe Terian, Fran Kelly, Lou Blass, who birdied in the last two games, and Chris Harrington, who shot three birdies in one game!

This activity is a Cheers-members-only activity. Please contact Keith Mackenzie, either at our Thursday social meeting at the Oakwood clubhouse or via email at [email protected].

Hamilton High School Donations: Cheers provides charitable support to needy students at Hamilton High School. Voluntary donations of food, household items, and/or cash are provided monthly. These donations are coordinated by Sally Wegryn, who can be contacted at 203-470-0733, in collaboration with Hamilton Social Work staff, and are greatly appreciated in our community.

Dine Out: On the fourth Wednesday of each month, members dine out together at a selected restaurant in the community. This activity, coordinated by Robert Russo, provides an opportunity to try new restaurants and perhaps new types of cuisine in the company of friends. Advance registration is required to confirm restaurant reservations.

Widows and Widowers: A support group for those experiencing grief recovery meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at Stone & Barrel at the Oakwood clubhouse. Contact Bob Russo for additional information at 480-266-4550.
