Oktoberfest was on October 28 in the Ballroom with a grand potluck dinner. We had some German music to get in the mood followed by a film showing German history and culture. Everyone had a very good time.
It was decided at the September meeting to ask our members to contribute canned goods for distribution to local food banks. These food banks have a great need of donations. The canned goods will be delivered by volunteers of our club or combined with donations from the other SunBird clubs for delivery. Everyone wants to help our neighbors in need, especially at this time of year, but the need continues throughout the year. Please bring canned goods for donation to future meetings. Thank you for your generosity.
We will hold our November meeting on Tuesday, November 25 at 5:30 p.m. The club is providing a sub sandwich supper on the patio. Please bring your own beverages. Paper products and silverware will be supplied by the club. Please note this is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and we hope this party will kick-off your Thanksgiving celebration.
The Christmas dinner has been scheduled for December 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Horizon Room in the Clubhouse. The menu is under consideration at the present time. We will have the final menu and cost at our November 25 meeting. Please keep December 8 open, thanks.
Community Day is coming and the Board is working on having a table with handouts about our club. We are looking for volunteers interested in staffing the table, even for a short period. We want to get the word out about our club to all of SunBird.
Our president, Frank Nechvatal, contributed the following piece which I am sure will be of interest to all our members. November 9 is the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall being demolished. The Berlin Wall was completed September 13, 1961 in the dead of night. It kept the East Germans from traveling/fleeing into West Berlin to get away from Communist controlled East Germany.
Due to the agreement between the Allied Powers, World War II ended with Germany divided into zones controlled by the United States, United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. The Soviets received East Germany and the sector of Berlin east of the Brandenburg Gate. Check Point Charlie, as it came to be known, was one of the American controlled points of entry into East Berlin.
The Berlin Wall became a symbol of a divided Germany until its fall on November 9, 1989. This date marked the start of the fall of Communist controlled East Germany. Reunification of Germany finally came to pass on October 3, 1990; a great day for the German people, east and west! It is now celebrated with a public holiday.
The American German Club always welcomes new members. Anyone who lives in SunBird and is of German descent or has an interest in German history or culture is welcome.
Auf wiedersehen
