The SunBird Team Championship, better known as the CRAB Tournament, will be held on Saturday, November 19 at the SunBird Golf Club. This tournament is a competition between the Canadian Club, the Roadrunners Club, the Americans and the Bandits Club; 30 foursomes, each consisting of a player from each group, will face off in a net stroke play format. The lowest score receives four points, second lowest three points etc. to the highest score one point. The team with the most points at the end of the tournament is declared the champion.
This tournament is a fund raising event to benefit the SunBird golf course. Again this year, a pre-tournament auction will be held Friday afternoon on November 18 on the patio. Joel Sybesma, SunBird’s resident auctioneer, will again lead the auction. Last year’s auction netted about $13,800 for the golf course capital fund. The potential success of this event is highly dependent on donations from the community, both golfers and non-golfers. Donations can be in the form of new or good used golf equipment, goodie baskets, certificates from local businesses and monetary. Of course, all are invited to attend the auction. Look for more definitive information regarding times in the November paper or on the Pro Shop bulletin boards.
The tournament committee will hold its first planning meeting on Tuesday, November 1 at 10:00 a.m. in the Horizon Room. Committee members and team representatives are Canadians – Wes Akerman and Dean Huyghebaert, Road Runners – Bill Johnson and Norm Ott, Americans – Jack Cooper and Bandits – Dean Tucker. Please contact these representatives if interested in playing or for information on making a donation. Remember, each team needs 30 players and the auction needs donations.
