A Decade on the Dance Floor: Honoring Outgoing President John Yu
After 10 remarkable years at the helm, John Yu is stepping down as president of the Sun Lakes Sunday Dance Club, leaving behind a legy that transformed the club from a small, exclusive gathering into one of the most welcoming dance communities in Sun Lakes.
When John took over a decade ago, the club was closed and resident-only, strictly couples, with visitors capped at two dances per year. Today, thanks to John’s leadership, the club welcomes everyone—singles and couples alike—with walk-ins greeted warmly at each and every dance.
“John didn’t just change the club’s policies—he changed its spirit,” said one longtime member. “Nobody ever feels like they need a special invitation to come dance and have a good time.”
Among John’s most impactful changes was moving away from requiring members to pay for an entire season upfront. Under his leadership, the club shifted to a simple $10 at-the-door fee, removing a barrier for newcomers and giving members the freedom to attend without a big financial commitment.
John also brought new life to the club’s evenings by adding full dining services, turning Sunday nights into a complete social experience rather than just an evening of dancing. On the dance floor, he modernized the club’s music by moving toward more contemporary bands, and he broadened the repertoire by adding line dancing and country dancing to the mix.
The results speak for themselves: a once-small, exclusive club has grown into a lively community gathering spot, known for its open doors, great music, delicious food, and warm welcome to dancers of every kind.
None of this growth would have been possible without the work happening behind the scenes. John sends special thanks to Bev and Don Dorge, who have served the club for eleven years, promoting it in countless ways throughout the community. Their quiet, essential service has been every bit as vital as the changes made from the top.
The club extends its heartfelt thanks to John Yu for ten years of dedication, innovation, and heart, and to Bev and Don Dorge for their steady support—and looks forward to carrying that legacy of openness and joy onto the dance floor for years to come.
As one chapter closes, another begins. The club is thrilled to welcome incoming president Kelly Haworth, who takes the reins with fresh ideas of his own. Members won’t have to wait long to see them in action—Kelly’s innovations will be on full display at the club’s Sept. 27 dance, marking the start of an exciting new era for the Sun Lakes Sunday Dance Club.
