Crystal Cards (CC) has served the Sun Lakes area since 2016, but thanks to volunteer Kathleen Voves, CC travels west to PebbleCreek (PC) in Goodyear, Ariz.! Kathleen’s friend Alice Heuple moved to PC. Alice has friends from Bend, Ore., who have settled in the retirement community of PC. They’re called “The Bend Girls.” About four years ago, they asked her to bring cards when they heard of her involvement in CC. A few times during the year, Kathleen packs up and drives to one of their homes, and they make a party of it—food, drink, fun, and card shopping! Not only do they shop, but the women also donate used cards. Alice Heuple or Kathy Nemeth host the event, and their friends bring more friends. Typically, 20 to 30 women attend.
The Bend Girls are a great example of what CC is about. Our volunteers not only make used cards into new cards, but they sell the cards, buy the cards, and donate their used cards. The greatest benefit from these efforts is that the money from the sales goes directly to My Sister’s Place, a domestic violence center in Chandler.
