Sun Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8053 works closely with philanthropic clubs within Sun Lakes that support our veterans. Sun Lakes Lions Club is such an organization with whom the VFW is proud to support. As a result of the Post’s support in ticket sales and volunteer work at the Lions’ recent spaghetti dinner, Lions Club leaders Joe Garner and Robert Scully present $800 to Post Commander Neal Peer to support veterans’ needs and promote democracy education and patriotism within our community – a common goal of both our organizations.
New Member Lester Horton received his Cross of Malta pin from Commander Peer as part of his installation into the VFW. Comrade Horton is a WWII and Korean War veteran serving in both wars as an aviation ordinance seaman in the Navy. Comrade Horton came to Sun Lakes in the 1990s from Olympia, Washington, where he was an entrepreneur. Also, the Post welcomed a transfer VFW member from Minnesota, Comrade Jerry Sullivan, a Vietnam veteran who served in the Air Force. New members such as Lester and Jerry bring their time and talents needed to serve our community. More members are needed to support the increasing demands to serve our military and the values of our nation. Veterans have always given, and now your time and talents are again needed. v
