To all our German Club members and interested individuals: We are back to having meetings. We will meet on Thursday Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room. That’s correct—we are moving to Thursday evenings. Please make note of that.
Our meeting will be devoted to planning our Oktoberfest, which will be celebrated at our Oct. 27 meeting. Attend and help plan this festival. We shall also discuss plans for our Christmas Party. We will have desserts and water and coffee at this meeting.
I will continue the description of the states that can be found in Germany. This month we shall look at Bavaria. This state is the biggest of the German states. It comprises a fifth of the land area of Germany. Bavaria’s unique culture is due primarily to the state’s Catholic heritage and conservative traditions, including language, cuisine, and festivals such as Oktoberfest (the celebration of Prince Ludwig’s marriage). The people consider themselves as Bavarians first and as Germans second. Their state flag is made up of white and blue squares. To this day, it is always argued which comes first: blue then white or white then blue (blau weiss oder weiss blau). Munich is the state’s capital city. Bavaria is known for its food and drink. Weisswurst (white sausage) and beer are always served. In fact, beer is served by the liter. A trip to Bavaria offers one excellent site to visit and great food and, of course, beer.
Auf wiedersehen
