Thirty years ago, Sun Lakes congregants of area places of worship noticed that many of their neighbors were unable to drive to church or to the grocery store. Church leaders and members banded together to provide basic transportation support for their elderly neighbors. Fast forward to 30 years later, this effort has grown into the Neighbors Who Care nonprofit organization, serving more than 600 elderly residents of Sun Lakes and South Chandler with 300 volunteers.
On Nov. 14 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Neighbors Who Care is hosting a celebratory event to include clients, volunteers, staff, partners, and press representatives. Additionally, the Mayor of Chandler, Kevin Hartke, will be in attendance and will offer a special proclamation. The event will take place at St. Amand Kitchen & Cocktails in Chandler.
Referencing the celebration planned for Nov. 14, Executive Director Sheryl Keeme said, “It is an honor to watch this amazing organization continue to provide such critical support to our in-need community members, at zero cost to them, in the spirit of providing the dignity of independent living at home. This program would not be possible without our volunteers who make a significant difference every day in the lives of our community members. It will be a delight to celebrate all of those who have kept this program growing over the last three decades.”
Neighbors Who Care data reveals that our volunteer services enable the elderly of our community to live in their homes for an additional five years on average by providing support for shopping, attending medical appointments, respite care, dinner delivery, and other services. Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact our volunteer manager at [email protected].
Press are invited to attend our event on Nov. 14. To RSVP, contact Sheryl Keeme via email at [email protected] or by phone at 480-895-7133, Ext. 170, by Nov. 7. For more information on our program, go to NeighborsWhoCare.com.
