Bocce is going strong at SunBird! In 2015 thousands of balls were rolled, hundreds of games played and many SunBird residents enjoyed the game and participated; 2016 will be even more exciting and more neighbors can enjoy the sport, beginning with the 2016 kickoff event!
Come experience the bocce fun. On Sunday, January 17, we will have an open court at the trial bocce court from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Come and see how a game is played, talk to some experienced players, learn the rules and throw a few balls. Enjoy refreshments and have a chance to sign up for some of the upcoming bocce activities.
In 2016 we will be offering weekly beginner lessons to familiarize new players with the game. The game is not intimidating, but a chance to roll a bocce ball outside of a game situation might encourage more SunBird residents to enjoy the sport. Also coming in 2016 is a team competition that will allow singles to partner with other singles to compete against other teams for bragging rights and prizes. All of this information will be available at the January kickoff event.
The trial court is located at the intersection of Championship Drive and Kerby Farms Road. The court may be used from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. by all SunBird residents and their guests. The bocce ball equipment is in the storage bench on the south side of the court. Use the code 8524 to open the lock. There is no vehicle parking on Championship Drive so we encourage everyone to use golf carts or bicycles and park those on the designated gravel areas. To accommodate our close neighbors, please keep your celebrating down and the area free of debris.
The Bocce Ball Club has team play on Wednesdays from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Anyone may sign up to participate in the club play on the sign-up sheet clipboard in the Clubhouse Library. At other times the court is available for open play on a first come basis. We ask that players limit their game to 11 points if others are waiting. You may also reserve the court for your use or organization. If your organization would like to have an event at the bocce court, contact either Bob Namon at 480-802-4684 or Dianne Reed at 612-616-9431.
This SunBird bocce ball test project needs everyone’s support to make it a permanent sport activity for our community.
