William A. Westphal

Dr. William A. “Bill” Westphal, age 73, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in Washington.

Celebration of life services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2014, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. Calling hours began at noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family received friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Interment took place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County, the United Methodist Church or the Washington Golf and Country Club. Bill was born April 23, 1941 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Victor and Lillian (Berry) Westphal. He graduated from Vinton High School in 1959. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and received his Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. He was united in marriage to Nancy (Mattes) Waters on May 5, 2014.

Bill has lived in Washington, Iowa, since 1965. He was in partnership with Dr. Max Smith, owning and operating Washington Eye Care Center until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Washington Community Y, the Washington Golf and Country Club, the Iowa Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He was a former member of Washington Noon Kiwanis. Bill received the Washington Iowa Distinguished Service Award in 1969 and served on the Iowa Optometric Association Board of Directors from 1982-1984. He enjoyed paying Cribbage, card games, golfing, doing yard work and wintering in Arizona.

Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy Westphal, of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Lisa Donnelly and husband Paul, of West Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Christine Greaves and husband Scott, of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Maxwell and Carolann Donnelly; Ethan, Emily, Jonathan, Richard, Tiffanie and Jacob Klement; sister, Vicki Vermedahl and husband Joe, of Duncan, Oklahoma; step-daughter, Lisa Waters, of Washington, Iowa; step-son, Jared Waters and wife Christina, of Ainsworth, Iowa; and step-grandchildren, Cheyanne, Savannah, Sierra, Bryce, Katelyn and Jenna. Bill is also survived by his mother-in-law, Catherine Mattes, of Washington, Iowa; sister-in-law, Shirley Streb and Husband Butch, of Hills, Iowa; sister-in-law, Kathleen Coleman and husband Ron, of Urbandale, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Ed Mattes and wife Joyce, of Kalona, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, Edric and Noah Greaves.
