Canadians’ last hurrah for the season

Marcia Hogan

March saw the SunBird Canadians tee it up for their final social event of the 2017/2018 season. Over 100 fortunate northerners who enjoy their winter in the resort played an 18-hole scramble on March 18.

Once again, our local realtors, Ruth Ann Hobbs, Theda Portanova, Dana and Scott Smith, Dave Meyers and Royal Henry, sponsored KP prizes for men and women on their respective holes. Dennie Moore of Four Peaks Pest Control presented each golfer with a bound notepad, and Randy Arias of Positive Painting organized a wine draw.

Golf was followed by a hot and delicious pizza dinner from Barro’s Pizza in our ballroom. This annual event is not about the golf. It is an opportunity for fellow Canadians to mix and mingle one last time before returning to their respective provinces – from British Columbia to Ontario.

A heartfelt thank you to our many American friends and neighbours for the warm hospitality they extend to more than 200 Canadians who winter at SunBird. Also, thank you to Layne, Wanda and the office staff for coordinating our social activities; to John and the maintenance crew for maintaining our facilities; and to Joe and the grounds crew for keeping our resort in pristine condition. Thank you to Marc and the turf crew for pulling out all the stops to improve our course conditions in March.

We do want to note that after six years of defeat by the American team, with a sigh of relief, the Canadians took the Conley Cup this year. Congratulations, Team Canada!

‘Til we meet again in the fall, have a happy and healthy summer.
