American German club

Trish Deflieze

Time for another newsletter; I’m sorry to report that I don’t have much to tell you about.

Our first meeting of the year will be held on September 23 in the Ballroom at 7:00 pm.

Because this article has to be submitted by September 10 to be printed in the October newsletter, this meeting has not yet taken place. I could, of course, fake it and pretend that it was great etc. etc. But I have decided, on my own, not to do that. I am sure we all enjoyed the September meeting and that we as a club agreed on how to celebrate Oktoberfest. I will report on that in the November newsletter. I hope this does not displease anyone but it’s just the way it is.

When talking to some of our members I learned that many of them no longer speak any German. Most of our members are third generation Americans. But they do have memories and stories of their grandparents and their German roots. I would very much like to write about these memories. As the season approaches I would especially like to write about Christmas memories and/or traditions. Please, please tell me your stories. How about some recipes for the famous German Christmas kuchen? If we all participate we could put together a really memorable Christmas newsletter.

Our October meeting will be held on October 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. At this meeting we will celebrate Oktoberfest. SunBird may not be Munchen but we will do our best to have a wonderful evening, with great food and entertainment. Maybe we can even sing Ein prosit.

Our club welcomes any SunBird resident who has German roots or interest in German culture and heritage.

Auf wiedersehen
