SunBird American/Italian Club news

Frank Nechvatal

The club met on Thursday, October 13. Our meetings have moved from the second Tuesday of the month to the second Thursday. The Horizon Room has changed the weekly dinners from Thursday to Tuesday, hence the need to move. President Elect Frank Nechvatal called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. in the Horizon Room. The first order of business was to request volunteers for calling members to remind them of meetings, a publicist, and a person to run the club shirt and name tag raffle. Next a discussion was had about the change in the County Health Dept. rules that prohibits our members from bringing baked goods/snacks to meetings. Options are to stay in Horizon Room and order desserts/snacks from the kitchen or move the meetings to another place like the Lakeview Room. This was placed before the membership for a vote. The last portion of the business meeting was about the club’s Christmas Dinner. It is scheduled for Thursday, December 15 in the Horizon Room. The menu will be Caesar Salad, Chicken Parmesan over a bed of pasta, Garlic Bread, Italian Lemon Cake or Italian Ice for those who are dairy intolerant.

After the business meeting members ate cookies prepared by the kitchen. Frank showed a one hour segment produced by PBS on Italian Americans. This is a four part documentary that goes “through extensive archival materials, plus interviews with scholars and notable Italian Americans such as Tony Bennett, Nancy Pelosi, Gay Talese, and John Turturro.” The Italian Americans tells the story of those who played vital roles in helping to shape a unique Italian American identity and transform American life and culture.
