Summer movie series continues

Associate Pastor Doug Ross

The growing popularity of the faith-based movie series – known as Senior Moment – will continue for the month of August. Each Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., in the Chapel Center, across the street from the Sun Lakes Country Club, Sun Lakes residents are gathering to view some of the best movies available.

The event is free – includes popcorn, candy, a cold drink – and perhaps, on occasion, other refreshments. A great respite from the heat! Everyone is urged to bring a friend!

Here is the schedule:

August 7 – Chariots of Fire – In the class-obsessed and religiously-divided United Kingdom of the early 1920s, two determined young runners train for the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell, a devout Christian born to Scottish missionaries in China, sees running as part of his worship of God’s glory and refuses to train or compete on the Sabbath. Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) overcomes anti-Semitism and class bias, but neglects his beloved sweetheart Sybil (Alice Krige) in his single-minded quest.

August 14 – Courageous – Two law enforcement officers find that while able to face up to dangerous situations, they are not well-equipped for fatherhood. When they see their children drift away – and then tragedy strikes, they find that a renewed faith in God makes all the difference.

August 21 – A Man Called Peter – Peter Marshall was a humble Scot who attributed a narrow brush with death to divine intervention. Convinced that he had been called to the ministry, he emigrated to the United States where he graduated from seminary to become a successful preacher. Happily married, Marshall and his wife endure her recovery from tuberculosis and his heart attack to see him become Chaplain to the Senate and gain national renown.

August 28 – Unplanned – This movie is perhaps the most controversial film in a long time – no doubt because of its attack on Planned Parenthood and Abortion on Demand. This movie is a mind-changer and a heartbreaker as well as both gripping and compelling. You see abortion through the eyes of one woman – a former Planned Parenthood Clinic director – who once believed she was doing good, and then comes to see abortion for what it really is!

Pastor Mitch McDonald, the newly-installed Pastor of Sun Lakes Community, said, “These films are some of my favorites. I look forward to them each week and enjoy meeting new Sun Lakers who attend. Let’s get acquainted – and please know I am available to help you at any time should you need comfort, prayer or counsel.”

Sun Lakes Community Church (an interdenominational congregation) meets every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at the Sun Lakes Chapel, across from the Sun Lakes Country Club. Call the church office at 480-895-9147 for information or if you are in need of pastoral assistance.
