The SunBird Men’s Golf Association held its second to last monthly meeting of the 2017-2018 season on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. The main item on the agenda was the election of officers for the 2018-2019 season. Those elected were Fred Nixon, vice president, Patrick Leach, treasurer, and Gary Popelka, secretary. Dan Carroll, current vice president, moved up to the position of president by constitutional rule. Changes to committee chairs, if any, will be reported after the April business meeting. Congratulations to the newly-elected officers.

February Men’s Club activities included the completion of the Match Play Challenge on February 1. These results were reported in the March paper. Gross/Net score tournaments were held on February 8 and 15. On February 8, the field was divided into four flights according to handicaps. The gross score winners, respectively, were Gerry Tomlinson, Wes Terry, Dan Carroll and Roy Comeau. The net score winners, respectively, were Don Hunt, Mike Viall, Dan Carroll and Earl Ferguson. February 15 had a reduced field of players due to weather conditions. There was play, however, for the remaining brave players. The scores are not currently available.

February 22 was the start of the annual Club Championship. This is a two-week total gross score event. This tournament is divided into five flights, again according to handicaps. Each flight will have a champion; however, the player with the lowest total gross score for the two weeks is declared the Club Champion. The second round was played on March 15. Due to article deadlines, the results were not available at the time of this writing.

Included in all of the February events were the qualifying rounds for the Men’s Net Shoot Out and the Couples Gross Shoot Outs. The results of these two events are reported separately.

There were three holes-in-one by Men’s Club members during the last month. Fred Nixon found the cup twice. The first one on February 8 during men’s day play on #14 and the second in open play on the 13th on #17. Eric Gossling achieved his ace on the 27th on #8.

Events played in March were the completion of the Club Championship, the couples gross and the men’s gross shoot outs, the three-day Conley Cup and the Men’s and Women’s Step Aside Scramble and awards luncheon. In April, rounding out the season will be the Palo Verde Home and Home tournament in addition to the regular events.

The final regularly-scheduled Men’s Club meeting of the season will be held on Tuesday, April 3.
