October Computer Booters highlights

Patricia Hill, Publicity Director

William Tully of ORBIBAL ATK provided a super review of the Orbital organization and some basic information on OPSEC (Operational Security). While the term has its roots in the military, it’s something we all do without recognizing it. It’s keeping things safe from the eyes and ears of an adversary, such as blocking our PIN when using an ATM or having security systems in our homes. We will want to take a harder look at that area in the future and he has agreed to provide basic info on how Orbital ATK handles cyber protection that applies to the average folks like us.

Also at the October meeting, Allan Levy, Class Director, discussed suggested classes and gauged the audience’s interest. He had some great suggestions — Photoshop elements, Internet safety, the Cloud and how to use it, password savers and form fillers, making a photo book and keeping your computer running well. Make sure to keep check the website and if you’re a member, watch your inbox to see when these informative classes are scheduled. Classes are free for members and $10 for non-members. They are held in the Arts and Crafts Room in Sun Lakes Country Club from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Bring your laptop; electricity is available. Remember to wear your Booters badge.

You can never learn enough about Internet security. Something is always happening and what you knew last year (or even yesterday) might not be true now. On November 3 we will have Mike Long of Advanced IT Solutions update us on Internet hazards, viruses and scams as well as how to safely navigate the web. If time permits, he will also give a timely presentation on the history of computers.

What you don’t know CAN harm you. Criminal entities are making the web a virtual minefield for stealing your data and personal financial information. Learn who’s trying to obtain your private information, how viruses and malware can infiltrate your machine, what types of viruses are out there and what they are capable of doing. Find out what you can do to protect yourself online by simply modifying your usage habits and raising your awareness.

The Computer Booters will participate in two Open Houses: November 4 at SunBird and November 14 at Sun Lakes. Stop by our table and chat with our volunteers to learn about the Computer Booters. Fill out a membership form there, on our website at www.computerbooters.org, or come to the November 3 meeting to pick one up.

If you have a computer, Smartphone or other technical device and have questions about them, join the Booters. Meetings are the first Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club.
