It’s a busy place at SunBird!

The Clubhouse swimming pool enlargement project is moving along. The demolition of the old swimming pool, Jacuzzi, decking and walls has been completed. The new swimming pool and Jacuzzi has been dug, plumbed, re-barred and shotcreted. The new bathroom has been built. Both Maricopa County and City of Chandler have been inspecting the project along the way with all inspections passing. The process of watching the large equipment in operation, concrete walls saw cut and holes drilled has been very interesting. Deck work will start soon with the new artistic pavers that will be installed for a cooler and better looking deck. The general contractor has been onsite almost the entire project and has been doing a good job in overseeing the sub-contractors and in performing the work. Bill Hook, chairperson of the SunBird Project and Long Range Planning Committee, has been completely involved in the oversight of this project as a volunteer for nearly every minute of the entire process. We appreciate his help and expertise in seeing that the new swimming pool and facilities are constructed as best as possible.

Springfield has allowed SunBird residents the use of their swimming pools this summer while the SunBird Clubhouse pool is under construction. Both swimming pools are open from 5:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m. each day. Springfield has allowed one SunBird water aerobics group to meet Monday through Friday from 7:00-7:45 a.m. to exercise. The rest of the time is for open swim and not for any other organized events. To enter Springfield, please use the McQueen Road entrance between Riggs Road and Hunt Highway. Check in at the gatehouse by displaying your SunBird ID card to the Patrol officer. We appreciate Springfield for this gracious offer and want to be respectful to all residents by following the rules.

Along with all of the construction inspections of the swimming pool, we have had some other inspections. The Health Department conducted a surprise inspection for the Horizon Room food and beverage facilities and operations receiving an A rating. Great job shout out to Julie Mathis, Food and Beverage Director and staff for keeping the facility and operations up to code. The Occupational Safety and Health inspectors inspected the Clubhouse elevator passing all requirements. Great job shout out to John Smith for keeping good preventative maintenance and service plans with the clubhouse facilities and equipment.

Summer maintenance and improvement projects are in progress with some already completed. A new dedicated Pro Shop air conditioner has been installed. An automated handicap door opener has been installed at the Clubhouse west entrance doors. A stainless steel door and additional cabinets have been added to the Horizon Room with two additional order and check out points forthcoming. Billiard tables have been recovered and leveled. Other miscellaneous projects around the Clubhouse are planned for maintenance and improvements also this summer. The Riggs Road vehicle gate entrance will have cameras installed to record all license plates and pictures of the vehicles entering SunBird. All of these are intended to maintain and improve SunBird and all the facilities keeping it one of the best clubhouses in Arizona.

An electric power outage affecting most of SunBird occurred this past month temporarily for fortunately only 15 minutes. As a reminder, this can occur during high temperature days with increased use of electricity or from causes of a monsoon storm. The vehicle gates into and out of SunBird have batteries to open the gates and barrier arms automatically if the power is off. The gates and barrier arms will stay in the open position until the power resumes. This is a safety precaution for those entering and exiting and in the case an emergency vehicle needs access during this period of time.
