The annual SunBird Men’s Golf Association Club Championship, a two-week event, was played on February 23 and March 2. All of the players who signed up to play on these dates were included in the tournament. The field was divided into four flights according to handicap; however, all scoring was based on gross score only. The player with the lowest gross score after the two weeks was declared the Club Champion. The winner and champion this year is John German with scores of 72 and 65 for a total of 137. Congratulations to John for two fine rounds. The winners in the individual flights were in Flight 1, Dale Stokke and Bob Gerber tied at 139; in Flight 2, Ron Morgan in at 142; in Flight 3, George Richardson at 147 and in Flight 4, Gary Whistler at 156.
The regular tournament events for the month included stroke/net play on February 9. The gross winners in the four flights, respectively, were Dean Huygebaert – 69, Loren Carrel – 69, Neil Donaldson – 76 and Ken Myles – 78. The net winners in the four flights, respectively, were Glen Ketchum – 57, Frank Roberson – 57, Gerald Hardy and Roy Comeau, each at 59 and Bob Cordray – 57. A four-person scramble was held on February 16. It was won by the team of Rick Koshuta, Russ Bower, David Fischer and Bob Cordray at 59.
Holes-in-one by Men’s Club members continue to be quite plentiful. Aces were achieved by Loren Carrel, hole 5; Loren Wallace, hole 17; Dick Tiffany, hole 5 and John Brockish, hole 13. That’s 11 of them in the last four months – Wow!
Men’s Club officers for the coming 2017-2018 season were elected at the regular business meeting on March 7, 2017. President is Loren Carrel who moved up, by rule, from vice president. Dan Carroll was elected vice president and reelected for additional terms were Sam Curatolo, treasurer, and Norm Ott, secretary.
The schedule of events for April are April 6 – Gross/Net, April 13 and 15 – Home and Home with Palo Verde, April 20 – Scramble and April 27 – 2-Man Best Ball.
A summer league, which had been previously formed, will continue this year. The league consists of teams from SunBird, Ironwood, Sun Lakes and Palo Verde. Four events are scheduled for this summer. They are June 22 at SunBird, July 11 at Ironwood, August 17 at Sun Lakes and September 7 at Palo Verde.
The last meeting of the 2016-2017 season will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in the ballroom.
