During the spring shop cleanup day, the Lapidary Club gave special recognition to long-time SunBird resident and club member, Bernie Logan, by bestowing on him the Hard Rock Award. The somewhat tongue in cheek award was bestowed on the 89 year old “In recognition of his outstanding (or stupid) effort in ascending successfully to the Globe onyx rock site and returning while only falling down three times.” Counter to the advice of fellow SunBird rock hounds, Bernie insisted on joining the group in the difficult climb to the rock collection site and all were relieved his scrapes and bruises were not serious. Bernie has been an active and generous participant in the Lapidary Club for many years and is best known for training members in the cutting, shaping and polishing of stones. He is especially noted for the many wonderful rock clocks he has created over the years.

The Lapidary Club, with its HOA managed shop on the second floor of the Clubhouse, is available to all SunBird residents interested in pursuing rock cutting/polishing, silversmithing, rock art, wire wrap jewelry, stained glass, fused glass, Ming trees or beading. A new ring saw for glass has been installed and over the summer the HOA staff has made several key improvements to the shop.

For safety reasons access to the shop is restricted to SunBird residents who are current members of the club and have successfully completed training specific to the activity they wish to pursue. Plans are now underway for the classes to be offered in the fall. The first club meeting for year will be Friday, November 6 at 9:30 a.m. in the Hopi Room and interested resident are urged to attend the meeting so teachers and classes can be arranged. Monthly meetings are held the first Friday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Information is also posted on the shop door and in the library or you can contact club president Lois Anderson.
