Garden Club has been busy beautifying SunBird

A previous Garden Club project on the corner of Waterview and Championship. The trees have grown in and now provide lovely shade for sitting and viewing the fountain. This year the Garden Club trimmed the trees, repainted the low wall and added solar lights. Each year the Garden Club has a lot of replanting; the Arizona weather that we love also plays havoc with some of our gentle plants.

Gudie Huffman and the SunBird crew move plants to help fill in the work the Garden Club has done at the east side of the Clubhouse. The Garden Club is as frugal as possible with its budget. These plants had to be removed from the front entrance and have found happy new homes around the Clubhouse and Post Office.

You’ve probably noticed that the club has been extremely productive during November and December depleting our bank account while beautifying SunBird. The bowls and new landscaping on the east side of the Clubhouse look spectacular. I love the way Gudie designed the dry creek beds. The entrance is so lovely now.

Thanks to Mary’s group for keeping the planters around the fountain watered and looking lovely.

Another Garden Club project, the fountain at the entrance to the Horizon Room, is getting a lot of attention. What a difference changing some walls from beige to red has made.

Toni’s weeders are keeping the gardens weed free. We want to once again thank the guys at Four Peaks Pest Control for offering us a spraying of pre-emergent weed control on the garden at Waterview and Championship. We are testing that out to see if we might be able to use it in other areas.

It’s not all work with the Garden Club; the Christmas Brunch was a huge success. Judy Cockrell, as always, wowed everyone with wonderful decorations. Thanks to the volunteers who each did a centerpiece for the tables. It really got everyone in the Christmas mood. Members enjoyed the ham, egg dishes, sweet breads and scones. Karen Courie’s scones were incredible and we really want to thank her.

The year is going quickly. The January meeting will have a speaker and will also be a time for the club to continue planning the February Founders Day luncheon, the March Home and Garden Tour and the April Vice President’s trip.

We encourage anyone interested in gardening to come to our meetings. You are always welcome.

The next meeting will be on January 9, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in the SunBird Ballroom.
