As we leave the summer months behind us, our area comes back to life in a hurry right from the start of October. There are an abundance of choices we can all make in making plans to enjoy the change in seasons and enjoy all that the area has to offer. It’s a really good time to keep your calendars handy, as October is jammed with things that you can do to enjoy the many things that will be going on throughout the month. For you railroad enthusiasts, the Arizona Railroad Museum will be open every Saturday and Sunday from noon-4:00 p.m. There you will find many vintage old railroad cars. There typically are a small selection of cars available to walk through, and there may be a minimal charge for that. These are the real thing.

A must see for the young and the old is the annual Rail Fair at the McCormick/Stillman Railroad Park. This is just a short trip up the 101, and is scheduled for two days usually in early October. Check the dates, or you can call me and I can help you find additional information. Admission is free, and the hours it will be open on both days is typically 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. There is a scenic train ride through the 30 acre park that the adults and children will really enjoy. Additionally, there is a Merry Go Round, plus an area where refreshments are available. There is a small charge for each of these activities. The City of Scottsdale also provides additional activities for the children in the paseo areas at no charge. The main attractions, of course, are on the main concourse where many of the area’s railroad clubs have operating exhibits of model railroad trains for your enjoyment. A fun day outing for all the young at heart.

Locally, within the Sun Lakes communities, starting in early October almost every weekend each of the Robson communities will be having their annual Community Days. The only exception to this will be SunBird, who schedules their Community Day for early November. Again, check your calendars for times and locations. We will have an operating display on the 29th at the Sun Lakes Country Club, and also be active in the Neighbors Who Care Fourth annual Fall Fair on October 22, which you don’t want to miss.
