SunBird resident and professional sculptor Art Norby discusses the process of creating a bronze statue with members of the Lapidary Club.

SunBird resident and nationally recognized award-winning sculptor and producer of life-size bronze statues, Art Norby recently hosted an open house for the members of the Lapidary Club. Art showed fellow club members his latest commissioned project; three sculptured life-size foxes, which are now at the foundry being cast in bronze, and in May will be placed at the entrance of a new housing development in Minnesota. Art reviewed the complex process of transforming lumps of clay to the finished product.

Beginning his professional career in 1976, Art is an accomplished professional artist in several media but is best known for his bronze sculptures which can be found throughout the country, including several which are featured in downtown Mesa. While retired from operating commercial studios, he continues his creative efforts from his SunBird residence. Art told the appreciative group, “Sharing my artwork is a way to share my view of life.” SunBird is fortunate to have such a creative and renowned artist in our community.

The SunBird Lapidary Club is dedicated to providing residents the opportunity to learn and pursue artistic crafts in glass, silver and rock. The club offers classes and operates the HOA Lapidary shop on the top floor of the clubhouse where information on joining and classes is posted.
